لا تصالح
don’t reconcile
ولو منحوك الذهب
Even if they give you the gold
أترى حين أفقأ عينيك ثم أثبت جوهرتين مكانهما
Do you see when I gouge out your eyes then I set two jewels in their place?
هل ترى؟
Do you see?
هي أشياء لا تشترى
These things cannot be bought
ذكريات الطفولة بين أخيك وبينك
The memories of the childhood between you and your brother
هذا الحياء الذي يكبت الشوق.. حين تعانقه
This shyness that suppresses the longing when you hug him
الصمت مبتسمين لتأنيب أمكما.. كأنكما
Being silent and smiling when your mum scolds you
ما تزالان طفلين!
As if you and he are still children
تلك الطمأنينة الأبدية بينكما
This eternal safety between you and him
هل يصير دمي بين عينيك ماء؟

An explanation of this piece from the arabic poems :
Amal Dunqul has a fluent, beautiful style of writing in general. There are some nice expressions here:
“Being silent and smiling when your mum scolds you”
“This eternal safety”
The poet fails in others:
“Do you see when I gouge out your eyes then I set two jewels in their place?”
This expression is more direct than it should be. And saying “gouge out your eyes” is really unsuitable and repulsive. It is a classic and famous Arabic poem. You can hear its words or expressions on TV or radio because it is about the lost homeland, refusing to give up and the duty of resistance. The original poem is much longer than this one. We choose the heart of the poem here. The poet ends his masterpiece with an interesting question:
So, can my blood between your eyes turn into water”"
This poetic image of the two children may express the strong links between all Arabs.
